The following list is the general warnings that were included in the most popular IUD's at the time of their release. Often these packaged inserts are not handed to the patient upon insertion but summarized by the physician and/or office. 

  • Ectopic Pregnancy 

  • Intrauterine Pregnancy 

  • Group A Streptococcal Sepsis 

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease 

  • Alterations of Bleeding Patterns 

  • Perforation

  • Expulsion 

  • Ovarian Cysts 

  • Anemia

  • Menstrual flow, prolonged

  • Backache

  • Menstrual spotting

  • Dyspareunia

  • Urticarial

  • Allergic skin reaction

  • Embedment

  • Spontaneous abortion 

  • Premature delivery sepsis

  • Septic shock

  • Death.

The following list available online from Rx Drug. This recognizes additional symptoms attributed to the IUD that your physician may or may not mention prior to insertion.

    • Abdominal/pelvic pain 

    • Headache

    • Migraine, 

    • Nervousness, 

    • Dizziness, 

    • Nausea, 

    • Vomiting, 

    • Bloating, 

    • Breast tenderness or pain, 

    • Weight gain

    • Changes in hair growth, 

    • Acne

    • Confusion 

    • Depression, 

    • Changes in mood, 

    • Loss of interest in sex, 

    • Itching or skin rash 

    • Puffiness in the face, hands, ankles, or feet.

    • Severe cramps or pelvic pain

    • Pain during sexual intercourse

    • Heavy or ongoing vaginal bleeding

    • Vaginal sores

    • Vaginal discharge that is watery, foul-smelling discharge, or otherwise unusual;

    • Pale skin

    • Weakness 

    • Easy bruising or bleeding 

    • Fever, chills, or other signs of infection;

    • Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body) 

    • Problems with vision

    • Sensitivity to light;

    • Jaundice

    • Alopecia, (partial and complete)

    • Hirsutism 

    • Endometritis.

    • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID),

    • Difficult removals

    • Vulvovaginitis 

    • Gastrointestinal disorders

Symptoms reported by IUD users

The following list is in addition to the other symptoms and have been reported by IUD users participating in social media groups in search of answers. These groups reach tens to hundreds of thousands of woman repeating having the same symptoms with the commonality of having the IUD.
